Kawambe-Omowale African Drum & Dance Theatre celebrates and offers a glimpse into the cultural expressions of African Peoples south of Sahara and their African diaspora through performances of drumming, dancing, singing, storytelling and our traditional audience engagement and participation.
Kawambe-Omowale is a Phoenix-based arts company now celebrating 40 years in the Valley of the Sun! We have performed throughout the state of Arizona, as well as, outside of our state. Through public and private performances, workshops, arts and crafts programs and our weekly community drum and dance class, Kawambe Omowale invites you to experience the brilliance and joy of captivating African art forms!
Our artists have traveled to Senegal and The Gambia in West Africa, to study the music and dance of the Mande cultures. We have also studied with master artists from other African countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, the Côte d' Ivoire, Guinea and with master artists from Cuba. We have performed for events such as the Festival of Nations, the Yoruba Arts Festival, the International Youth Arts Festival, the International Percussive Arts Society's National Convention, and City of Phoenix Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast, Valley Wide Black History Month, Juneteenth and Kwanzaa Celebrations and at venues such as The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center and the MIM, Musical Instrument Museum. We are available for school-based performances and residencies, after-school programs, community organization performances, workshops, and tailored programs, corporate events, and private functions.
